High School Prep Fellow - Fiver Children's Foundation

Location: New York City, NY & Poolville, NY    Dates: May 21 – August 18, 2018

 Compensation: $667/week stipend, up to 5% bonus   Deadline: March 25, 2018

 

FLIA Overview

FLIA cultivates leaders and strengthens youth-oriented nonprofits through a fellowship program. Fellows, individuals interested in entering the social sector, work on-site full-time at a partner nonprofit to develop or implement a pre-determined enrichment program.

Throughout the fellowship, fellows gain various professional skills including fundraising, communication, program development,  in a fast-paced, hands-on learning environment.

The Fiver Children’s Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization that makes a 10-year commitment to children from underserved communities throughout New York City and central New York. Through character-building summer and year-round out-of-school time programs, Fiver empowers children to make ethical and healthy decisions, to become engaged citizens, and to succeed in school, careers, and life.

 

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

You will ...

  • Enhance and facilitate Camp Fiver’s programs focusing on applying and transitioning to high school within New York City
  • With rising Eighth Graders:
    • Enhance and facilitate workshops to identify high school programs and understand the application process
    • Facilitate one-on-one meetings for personalized guidance on selecting preferred high school programs and setting goals for the start of the school year
  • With rising Ninth Graders: 
    • Enhance and facilitate workshops about the transition to high school and share their high school admissions experiences
    • Facilitate one-on-one meetings for personalized guidance on the transition to high school and setting goals for the start of the school year
  • Initial program development in NYC Office from May 29 - June 8, 2018 
  • Working directly with youth including facilitating above programming at Camp Fiver in Poolville, NY from June 11-August 18, 2018 (room & board provided)
  • During camp, you will maintain the responsibilities of Camp Staff including working six-days per week
  • Attend pre-fellowship training retreat in Portland, OR May 21 – 25, 2018 (expenses covered)
  • Fundraise $500
  • Weekly FLIA responsibilities including check-in’s
  • Submit final report

  • Enhance and facilitate Junior Institute component, three workshops, for rising juniors
  • Create and facilitate Senior Institute component for rising seniors, including creating college portfolios
  • Create and facilitate Graduate Institute component for rising college freshman
  • Coordinate summer college trips 
  • Establish system to ensure coordination between staff based in New York City and based at Camp Fiver
