Casie Keegan with Fiver Children's Foundation

Casie Keegan shares what it was like to work with Fiver Children's Foundation as an Environmental Awareness Fellow during Summer 2017. As a way to reflect on and showcase their experiences, we ask our fellows to record themselves answering a series of questions about their fellowship experience.

Summary

Casie developed and implemented a gardening curriculum, advocated for composting at Camp Fiver, and developed and implemented an onsite camping program. Through these programs, youth participants at Camp Fiver had the opportunity to expand their knowledge of environmental sustainability and become stewards of the environment. Additionally, through the different Fiver Environmental Education programs, youth participants had the opportunity to learn and spend time in a setting different from those they are primarily exposed to in urban communities

Overview

  • Researched comparable environmental education programs to develop Camp Fiver gardening and camping curriculum

  • Facilitated and iterated garden workshops and led overnight camping expeditions with groups of youth

  • Coordinated with camp staff to ensure incorporation of garden produce in meal-times

Impact

400 youth estimated across Camp Fiver
